UNU Midday Forum - Iraq and the UN: Past, Present and Future

After Saddam’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990 the Security Council considered Iraq a threat to peace and security and imposed sanctions on and under chapter seven issued 73 resolutions against Iraq. Saddam did not comply with these resolutions and continued to challenge the UN and international laws. After the fall of Saddam’s regime in 2003 Iraq has started to cooperate with the UN.

As part of its UNU Worldwide in New York series, UN University NY Office (UNU-ONY) held a panel discussion. Every day, small arms and light weapons (SALW) kill and maim, wound and threaten millions of adults and children. The impacts of these weapons can be vastly different for women and men, girls and boys. A careful consideration of gender and age is rare in the formulation of small arms policy, of planning small arms collection or control, or even in small arms research. Speakers at this event shared their experiences and research related to themes in the book.
